He was born in a small town of Ellis, Kansas on September 10, 1919. He attended school, lived, and worked on a farm in this area of northwestern Kansas. After there he was sent to Camp Barkley, Texas where he received Basic Medic Training from February through March of 1942. He continued to serve in the mediacl unit at various posts. In March of 1943 he was assigned to the 95th Division and received his basic infantry training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He continued to train with the division at various locations. In 1944 he followed the division for training att Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania before shipping to Boston for deploymentoverseas with the division. He sailed with the division arriving in England in August of 1944 where theyr awaited deployment to France. He fought with the division in France and participated in the battles to liberate the city of Metz. He continued to participate in the battles with his unit, Company K 378th Infantry Regiment until late December on 1944. He was a sergeant and squad leader in the infantry with Company K. He was wounded in action on December 24,1944. As a result of his wounds he was sent to the hospital in England to recover. He returned to duty in May of 1945 and served until he was returned home with the rest of the division in June 1945. After the returned to the states he went to Camp Shelby, Camp Chaffee, and was discharged honorably from Camp Gruber in October 1945. When he left the service he returned to civilian life in Ellis, Kansas where he died in 1956 of natural causes |
